Lawyer Greg Noble explains that New Jersey has a law called Conscientious Employee Protection Act (CEPA) which protects employees from retaliations against what is commonly known as "whistle blowing." If you are an employee and you report an illegal action to your boss, you are protected against adverse actions or termination. If you tell your boss that there is some illegal accounting practice going on, or that the employer is doing something illegal or against the state public policy - something that affects the citizens of the state -- you are protected from adverse actions. If you complain to an outside board like OSHA or a state or federal agency about a violation or an illegal activity, your employer cannot terminate you, demote you, dock your pay, suspend you or do anything in retaliation. Employers have to be careful of how they treat employees who are trying to advance public policy. For more information visit www.lawnj.net.
