It's a shame the camera didn't catch more of the snare stickwork around the middle of this solo or the rest after the horns joined. This solo was played in both 78 and 79. Yes, matched grip. We still used drum straps and not harnesses but wore the snares flat across so matched made good sense. And as you can imagine, all the rimshots were hard on right sticks.

@JessOnTheRun I agree completely.

Thanks for posting this! What a fantastic drumline.

We were there for the whole week and watched all the prelims from about the 15th row up on the 50. For the finals night somehow we got 2nd row 50 yard line seats. Some guy wanted to sit up higher and traded with us. Wow! What a week!

This was my one and only DCI finals to attend. Mile High Stadium in Denver. What memories! Hopefully they won't be my only DCI finals moments.

but they sound horrid... thank god for concert percussion instruments instead of those bastardized high pitched stacatto rinky dink keyboards. Absolutely no bottom tones at all. marching timpani? uhhhgg... served its purpose to get them grounded... but a nightmare until such time.

1978 and '79 SCV are still my two favorite drum lines of all time. Every segment (snares, tenors, basses, timps, mallets, cymbals) was best in clas in DCI. Of course with Fred Sanford's magnificent arrangements and teaching technique, Vanguard was a breed apart, and above.
