The White European settlers were the ones who led the wholesale slaughter of Buffalo, sometimes intentionally to drive the Natives out because they relied on them for a living. The Natives in contrast to the Whites took only what they needed and more importantly understood that the Buffalo were a finite resource.

Technically the "indian" migratory way of life is no longer viable with trespass laws, the illegality of violent tribal feuds and a severe lack of buffalo herds.
