There are times when I hate what I study, and wonder why on Earth I chose that damn school I'm attending (actually this year it's been MOST of the time). But there are other times, when I just remember why I did it; and recently studying Greek tragedians was one of those rare occasions. It just hits me so much how myths and stories narrated thousands of years ago still can make our hearts stretch and break, and that through them we can still go down into human nature so much. It feels magical.
The Iliad is actually an epic poem, but it's still one of the greatest myths ever told, and also a tragedy for the contents of the story, and it contains one of my favourite tragic characters of the ancient times, Hector. He's a true hero and I love him. I find myself rooting for the Trojans all the times, and when I read/see his death it's just heartbreaking.
Quoting Wikipedia:
"Indeed Homer places Hector as the very noblest of all the heroes in the Iliad: he is both peace-loving and brave, thoughtful as well as bold, a good son, husband and father, and without darker motives. When the Trojans are disputing whether the omens are favourable, he retorts:

One omen is best:
defending the fatherland."

So this is just a tribute to him -- trying to go through his most defining relationships and allegiances and acts -- and to show my love for the Greek myths. I kept my editing basic because I didn't have much time, but I hope you still enjoy :)

Sidenote (I'm trying to limit the usual random rambling for once :P): the film "Troy" may have many big -- and sometimes really avoidable! - mismatches with the poem (Menelaus and Ajax killed by Hector? Agamemnon killed in Troy? Achilles in Troy? WHEN did this happen??), but the atmosphere, the values of those ancient people and the characterizations of the two main heroes (Hector and Achilles) are great and very faithful in my opinion. Eric Bana played Hector just like I've always imagined him...he was perfect!

*Voiceovers*

Hector: "You know I don't want to fight...I want to see my son grow tall."
Hector: "This is my country. I don't want to see them suffer."
Odysseus: "Let them say I lived in the time of Hector, tamer of horses."
Odysseus: "Will strangers hear our names long after we're gone, and wonder who we were...how bravely we fought...how fiercely we loved?"
Priam: "No father ever had a better son."
Hector: "Defend your country. Fight for her!"
Hector: "I killed a boy today. And he was young...he was much too young..."
Hector: "If I die..."
Andromache: "No!"
Hector: "...I don't know how long the city will stand."

  • Hector is a true hero, not Achilles!

  • @LNBlack29 Well, if you read Homer, it’s not that simple…it’s just that Achilles is more a product of his culture, he’s the top of its values, while Hector has a more modern sensibility. It’s definitely natural to sympathize with him <3

  • @irydionlover93 I've read that some scholars consider the possibilty of Hector being the actual hero of Homer's Iliad...

  • @LNBlack29 gosh, late late reply, sorry about this! ^_^''

That's an interesting idea, he is certainly characterized differently from all the other heroes there...where did you read it? :)

  • @irydionlover93 I can't really remember right now, it was some time ago... About what you said about Hector having a more modern sensibility, it's not exactly like that. There's a famous scholar who says that there is only one sacred value today: love; and that no man dies for religion or for his country (i'm not talking about terrorists or soldiers here; but about modern values. If you pay close atention to the movies today you'll see that; even in fantasy/epic movies etc)

  • @LNBlack29 I didn't intend modern as contemporary ^_^ we just said at school that he seemed to fight for motives more typical of the Modern Age, and country is among them :) I think that even if surely today it's rather optimistic that someone could fight for those values only, he is still closer to our sensibility than the other heroes who are all products of the "shame culture" of that age (I don't know if it's called the same in English ^^'''). That's what we said in class at least! ;)

  • I was looking for a video like this...:)

Eric Bana's performance was so underrated in this movie, i think he was absolutely incredible. Im really speechless.

He is playing the most perfect man in this movie, beautiful on the outside as well on the inside, very brave and noble, with no dark motives.

I think any woman would want a man like Hector. Unfortunately a man like him does not exist in the real world. In a movie you always see what they want you to see, you never see what you get

  • I felt so bad for the death of hector. more than the death of Achilles

perfect ending to an amazing movie Hollywood will not make movie so good like this .

    God bless the world

  • @anciLovesJim Totally agreed. The age of heroes usually seems to be over nowadays…but sometimes there are acts of courage around that make you hope again :)

    Thank you for commenting! <3
