Poetry Slam--"Con" by Kavi

With every step she walks away
I hope you know
that she's making more and more mistakes
the further she goes

with a few other guys
tryin to live the life described
to her by crooked ties
to Society
where borns and nurtures anxiety
that she cannot fit
with them
so she forfeits
her love with you
because your feelings
so organic, so pure, so true
that she wonders:
WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU.

There must be something wrong with

how your words make her burst
into fits of laughter that make her stomach hurt
after almost every time you talk.

or how you have to fight with yourself
to not open her door because you know independence
is what she strives for
but you can't help that she's the one you want to care and provide for
everywhere that she walks.

Or maybe it's messed up
how you love the way she looks when
she's not dressed up
and with her all the time in the world you'd want to take up
so you asked if you could see her more often
without make up.

Or maybe it's wrong when you fight
and you know that you're right
but she won't stand to be taught
something new, especially by you, because it's not
what she's used to
so it becomes a habit
she whines every time
and you just let her have it

Now you're probably doing the same thing
you always do
blaming yourself saying it's not her, it's you
while she makes a pro and con list
she says I know I owe you money,
here you go and pawn this
and it makes you wonder if your love meant the same to her
because money?
What was money when it came to her?

As your friend
seeing her tear you down
time and time again
i've always told you
it wasn't you, it was her
but maybe I was just bitter
so this time
can I flip-flop my mind
cause i've been thinking lately
would you hate me if I put the blame all under
your name? Now I think that you're crazy and maybe
you're the one who needs
the most change.

Cause if she can't see all that you do
that she has to make a silly list
tell her to list-en to this
or she could even have..
a lesson from my fist.

I'm kidding but i'm kinda not
freshman in college, i'll admit she got hot
but as this new girl unfolds
I can almost feel the cold as her soul
dissipates into the air..
Stop talking to her, man, she's not even there
i'm sorry...if I seem a little spiteful
but she's wasting your time
saying nothing insightful
no opinions that even belong to her
all the girls talk, she just smiles and concurs

remember how you loved her taste in books
now the most she reads is on Facebook
chat with her thousands of friends
while the texts that she sends to you
are getting shorter and shorter.

remember when you two agreed
you don't need alcohol or weed
to have fun...
remember "let's wait til we're 21,"
you said she's
so passionate
so much WILL power
so what WILL she do with that amaretto sour in her hand
cause it doesn't look like she plans on passin it along
and i'm sorry if I read it the wrong way
but are her cheeks that red from being inside all day?

These college years are for finding yourself
and assisting others, should they need the help
but if she does get lost I hope she's lost by herself.

And her so-called friends
She probably sees them as her college capstone
but I just see a college girl without a backbone.

That girl with no flaws no trace
of mistakes cause she can make up her face
but not what's inside
Like she can't make up her heart
The way she can make up her mind

So she said she's ready to set the line
ready to let you fall behind
eyes open searchin for something
she has yet to find

but everyone has a blind sight
even though she's left
you've gotta get your mind right

she said she has so much left to discover
you would let her go if you really love her
but ain't that some bullshit.
Cause no matter how far she goes
you're the most caring person she'll EVER know.

If she chooses to let you go
to search for something else
then maybe she isn't ready for that life yet
the life that you promised her since the day that you met


it's been you all along.
It's not her, it's you.
too promising
too caring
too loving.


But are these the flaws
did they cause
her to walk away taking that risk

but trust me
with time
with boys
she will be holding on to your wrist
with no more cons on her list.
