Wallingford, Connecticut sits astride the Quinnipiac River in northern New Haven County. Situated in the Hartford-New Haven corridor, Wallingford is traversed by U.S. Highway Route 5, Interstate 91, State Highways Route 15, Route 68, Route 71 and Route 150. Passenger transportation is provided by Amtrak and by local buses, while air service is available at Tweed New Haven Airport about thirteen miles away and at Bradley International Airport, approximately 40 miles north of Wallingford off Interstate 91.
First established in 1667, Wallingford was incorporated in 1670, at which point the population of planters and freemen made up a population of about 120. During the 19th century, Wallingford emerged as a leader in the pewterware and silver industries, which were later absorbed by the International Silver Company of Meriden, Connecticut. A train station was completed in 1871 and remains noted for its unique architecture; among the last of its kind, Wallingford's historic train station underwent major restoration efforts in the early 1990's and still stands today. Currently, Wallingford is the twenty-third most populous community of Connecticut's one hundred and sixty nine cities and towns.
Wallingford has diversified its commercial and industrial base over the past decade attracting high technology industries in place of earlier, more traditional heavy manufacturing firms. It is the home of a large variety of industries and major corporations spanning the spectrum of the medical, health care, service, hi-tech specialty metal manufacturing and research development. The development of the Barnes Industrial Park, Casimir Pulaski Industrial Park, Wharton Brook Industrial Park, and the South Turnpike Road area have contributed greatly to the community's economic expansion. The Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, the Town's largest taxpayer, has established a research and development facility in Wallingford's MedWay Industrial Park.
