The Blob is one of the most used flies in competition fishing on stillwaters here in the U.K ..

  • can you use deer hair for the yellow end part of the fly?

  • Hi numberboyowns,

You really need the blob fritz to get the translucent effect but I'm sure if you just use deer hair it would still catch fish..

    All the best Davie

  • Davie,

Would this fly work for tailing carp in shallow water riffles during spawing... Like to replicate a mullberry or bug?

  • Hi zachthefisherman,

It would be certainly worth trying as it does give a great impression of an egg.Let me know how you get on if you give it a go..ATB Davie

  • Is this a spring fly and is it also reffered to as a porcupine fly?

  • Hi tjmfishing,

I've never heard it called a porcupine fly before but it would be an ideal name for it..This fly is fished in the lochs and lakes here in the U.K for rainbow trout mostly all through the season. I'm always amazed how it takes fish in all conditions..

    All the best Davie

  • One of the theories I've heard of how the Blob's work is that, the trout mistake the blob for a large group of Daphnia and that is probably why when the trout takes it you usually always find it at the back of the trout's throat.

  • Absolute killer for stillwater carp, especially where bank anglers have been chumming with minced maize or whole kernel corn!

I've tied up a few without deer hair and with some lead wrapping on the shank to enable faster sinking for deeper water.

  • @DavieMcPhail Thanks, I know that a good friend caught a large speckled trout in the middle of the summer. They were amazed when he said that he caught it on a "porcupine fly" which was described to me as a yellow and red mess. Thanks Davie
