"Protect and Survive" was the title of a series of booklets and a Public Information Film series produced by the British government during the late 1970s and early 1980s, dealing with emergency planning for a nuclear war.
The purpose of the programme was to provide members of the public with instructions on how to protect themselves and survive a nuclear attack. If such an attack had been deemed likely by the Government during any period of international crisis, a copy of the 'Protect and Survive' booklet would have been distributed to every home in the UK, and the films would have been transmitted on domestic television. The booklet and the films detailed a series of steps to be undertaken by the public to improve their chances of survival during a nuclear attack. These included the recognition of attack warning, fallout warning, and all-clear signals, the preparation of a home "fallout room" and the stockpiling of food, water, and other emergency supplies.
'Protect and Survive' was simply designed, easy to understand, and similar to the advice of most other emergency planning authorities of the time. In the opinion of some contemporary critics, however, the 'Protect and Survive' films were deeply and surprisingly fatalistic in tone

I'll be more scared of that then the bomb.

  • if your outside but survive the initial blast, you have approx 1 hour to get indoors before the fallout starts to land

  • @alextankian yeah and i love how the goverment think we are thick to not take cover and just look at the shiny light and yes everyone knows that if the bomb hit london, the first 50 miles would be totally destroyed on impact i live in manchester and i would need to move to wales before im mildly safe lol

  • @oxfordinvestigations very true but ,sorry I'm going to be a know it all now, we didn't win the cold war not even America did it was because the soviet union was in financial ruin and also the Russian people were starting a revolution in the early 1990's, the USSR disbanded and all power was given to the peoples republic of Russia to start a democratic society so the Soviet Union destroyed itself, thought you would like to know, have a great day :)

  • "Before entering shelter, brush and shake off any fallout dust you may have picked up"!

  • @halife91191: I suspect you may be right lol.

  • @PinkFloydFan74 that was said to give people in the danger zones a sense of hope

  • @PinkFloydFan74 There's a reason why they tell you to hide in the corner of your house, rather than out in the open and it's not to keep you alive...

  • Soooo........in the event of a nuclear war, hide under a kitchen table? I mean.....society is ruined, food is poisoned and you risk disease every time you step outside for at least the next 30 years (Is Chernobyl safe yet?) But...hey....you're alive.

  • @fearthefurby I'm living on the edge, I'm always, without fail, ONE second. ;)

  • Am I being daft here, or does the all clear warning sound the same as the attack. So all the enemy needed to do was to wait, then send another attack, the second alarm would be rung, everyone would think it was the all clear, come running out and get blown to kingdom come. Just because soem dumb arse couldn't think up another sound for the all clear. Shit. And to think we won the bloody cold war...

  • wtf
