This song expresses a longing for the time when the Christian will see the Master face to face. In the tradition of American shape note singing that dates to colonial times, the song appeared in the 1820's tunebook, The Missouri Harmony. In a notable feature, the fuguing section calls for the tedious years to 'roll away,' with a melody line that imitates a rolling motion. As sung at the 26th annual Missouri State Convention, March 2011.
Thanks for this: a very strong piece with lots of colourfuil word-paintinmg on "rolls" and that ao-so-plangent minor modalism.
