  • could you use one of these that doesnt lead to a sump but leads to a drain and use it for water changes?

  • @bradv97 sure. Simply start filling the tank, and the extra water will overflow out of the tank for you.

  • couldn't be more clear thanks for the help and the class make sure you do more videos your very clear in explaining it. I just learned how to do an overflow thank's a lot

  • @sbazain Thank you. I have plenty of other videos just like this one, with many more to come.

  • i have duckweed in my tank, could i put a sponge filter on the top the inlet right at the water line so it doesn't get into the filter?

  • @theredletterdays that would work, but would also slow the flow of the drain. You would also have to watch it closely to ensure the sponge does not clog.

  • @scratchresistant I can explain what an end cap in the video once, or 50 times in the comments. While most know what it is, some dont. I try to cover all levels of experience.

  • @TNTDSOL1 most likely.. the hole in the end cap is a vent for air to come in and allows the water to flow down if no hole in the end cap you are just creating a straight syphon and it wont re-start .. if build right these overflows do not need to be re-primed. i havent primed mine in over 8 months and i even drained and moved my tank across the room and still never had to re-prime it.

  • hey joe while i love your channel i do have a few suggestions on this one .. i have been using pvc overflows on a few tanks and my 150 been set up for 8months with one. The check valve tube and hole is not needed u can prime your overflow from the hole in the vent end cap. also i use a T inside my tank and use Vynl Gutter Guard to cover the holes and tighten it on with zip ties so no fish can get in also stops any snails from clogging the hole up. come check out my videos of my tank to see thx

  • I am using this overflow on my 40 breeder right now. However, when I shu my pump off it loses it's prime and I have to re prime it. Any thoughts? I was just watching the video and noticed that I do not have my caps drilled. Is this the problem?

  • @IONICSILVER No, not with this type of overflow. You would have to have a drilled tank with a straight pipe for the drain not to have to prime it. Every HOB overflow needs to be primed.

  • @uarujoey

To clarify, is there a way to get this water to flow WITHOUT having to prime?

    Thanks
