I had the great honor to view this ceremony and it was done with the utmost respect and honor for the Marines on Iwo Jima and the flag. Thanks to Sgt. Grit and his team for their love and dedication to our troops in harm's way both past, present and future.
Nope. The pole is too short. The flag was a WWII flag, and was the exact size as the one in the original photograph. And as good as we are, even Marines can't effect the weather, so the flag didn't fly the way it did originally. The young men are members of JR. Marine detachments. And as far as I am concerned they did a fine job.
Two pieces of water pipe. The first and second flags were raised using lengths of water pipes that were found on top of Suribachi. The Jappanese had constructed an impressive network of caves under the entire island, and were able to supply water to all areas, as well as providing shelter, hospitals, and HQ areas.
