love bourdain. (can't find the clip on Shangrila) we lived in Shangrila (zhongdian) for 3 years n are going back.. agreed, it is an exploitation of a region to bring in tourist dollars. it does better the lives of the locals there, the Han Chinese anyway, but not so much the Tibetans who are discriminated against in every aspect of life there . we made fun of the tourists that came in polluting bus loads. 'no other exploitable resources'? - well, if you haven't been before, go see.

There is no Shangri-la. There's only the pseudo-Shangri-la that the Chinese have designated as such in the hopes of bringing tourism to a region with no other exploitable resources.
