Artist Gabriela Anastasio collaborates with filmmaker Dmitry Trakovsky for this short piece about our fragmentary perception of space and time. The original work was part of Gabriela's exhibition in Santa Cruz on June 16, 2007. In that show, this video was presented as a visual installation alongside the sculpture. Music: compilation from Herbert's Bodily Functions. www.gabrielaanastasio.com

  • one word WHITEBALANCE!

  • We could have corrected the white balance but decided to leave the errors in... now the changes of color seem central to the clip's aesthetic... which was partly intentional and partly created by our situation (bad camera, one night to shoot, no tripod, no lighting, etc.)

  • was cool tho

  • Thanks

  • I enjoy how well edited and synchronized the blocks are to the song. I also enjoy the entire concept behind the video- the growth of these blocks. However I feel that more angle shots, rather than straight on views, would have helped vary the video a bit more. Also the lighting was dull and could have been enhanced. Also I was not to keen in the addition of the figure; I believe the movie could stand strong alone without the movement of a person.

  • Thank you for commenting! I agree that this video is of a very low technical level. We filmed it on a home-video camera in about 5 hours throughout the night. However, the single-angle long take as well as person entering the shot were intentional decisions. Multiple angles would have emphasized the gimmick over the actual process of creation, and the person, in my opinion, reminds the viewer of the human presence behind what seems to be autonomous cube growth.

    5.that's alot of squares.

6.you should be more careful when throwing/sliding those around you might knock it over and have to start over for real.

    7.and that would suck.

  • I was so involved from the beginning, that I wasn't even aware of the lighting until the last segment when the boxes rub up against the viewer's nose. It succeeds in emphasizing the polarity of space. I wouldn't encourage any changes. The artist's appearance now and again not only pulls in the human element, but gives a sense of time and decision. As it is, I gave 5 stars, but this film deserves much higher, as it's over the top.

  • neat!
