Based on the short story "Pickman's Model" by H.P.Lovecraft.

Produced for Professor Geoffrey Fletcher's Directing the Camera Class at the Tisch School of the Arts, NYU, Fall 2007.

Starring Simon Miller as Pickman and Rit Saraswat as Thurber.

The painting we never see is of a demonic beast, done in a very realist technique with an almost life-like attention to detail. I think you can figure out the rest yourself.

Filmed on 24p video with a Panasonic AG-DVX100B camera.

  • I feel it does not shows the horror of the real H.P. Lovecraft's tale. Perhaps is the lack of a soundtrack, or that the camera just does not moves and have no transactions or is just that is not like the original tale. You can make it better I know so.

  • I like this video. They worked in my favorite aspect of Lovecraft fiction: the queerness. Most of Lovecraft's male characters seem to hold queer attractions for one another or somehow exhibit queerness in deviant ways (read "The Thing on The Doorstep"). I think this holds true here. Thanks, alexcapriole.

  • @alexcapriole Man, you could take a ghoul from an old game called "Blood" - authors of this game made it inspired by Lovecraft and ghouls looking just like Lovecraft's ghouls there

  • Not bad, Considering you never actually showed the horrifying paintings. I have to say, though, it doesn't evoke the sensation of horror without the imagery, or at least the description. To truly do this one justice, some version of the ghoulish creature should have been shown, either the painting or the photo, thus defining the unnamed character's unease as he looked back and forth between them. People unfamiliar with HPL's story would be totally lost and just think Pickman to be a little off

  • I expected them to start making out.

  • Great film, I hope you received honors in your class for this.

  • Wonderfull!

  • Something doesn't fit in this version but I'm not sure what exactly. Nevertheless good job.

  • I think perhaps this is an interpretation of the story in which pickman's painting is not of a cosmic man-rat? Even if i'm wrong about that intention, the possibility is neat.

  • Nice work, only one complaint, the camera is too modern.
