What Dr. Gilmartin is saying here strikes me as odd. Clearly, a great deal of happiness can result from marriage, and yet most people I know seem to be pretty much the same people after marriage as they were before, at least after the initial buzz has worn off. He also neglects to mention the many marriages that degenerate into apathy, or even worse, power struggles, misery and divorce. The picture is far less clear-cut than he makes it out to be.
I know a guy who lives with his wife, their two teen sons and his mistress. He arranged for the mistress to put out for the older teen boy. No "passing phase" problem for that kid. What a cool dad!
