This song is connecting with a tradition of ballads that goes way back, in which the woman is killed by the man who "loves" her. See "Banks of the Ohio," or "Pretty Polly," as examples of this. They are weird, but the fact that they are old songs gives me the creepy feeling that they were based in fact at one time.
