@djoe1961 yessir, a great song. And if you're ever in St Louis, drive downstream to St Genevieve and check it out. Pretty amazing old French settlement. Cheers!
You got me MacFeeley! You are spot on. I knew it was about the town, and loved the melody of the song. As for the town being taken away, that was just wrong useage. I stand humbly corrected. Thanks for pointing that out and clearing up the record. I wasn't there, nor do I know what happened , if ANY of the might Mississippi touched the town. If it didn't I am happy for the town for keeping the monster out of there stores and homes. Good points.
@djoe1961 ok then...just wondering why its still there? Buildings date from before 1800? My understanding is that people rallied from St Louis south to Cape Girardeau and sandbagged the whole town to save it. So "St Genevieve holds back the water" meant exactly that.
the guy to the left of Jay is Chris Masterson...this guy is an amazingly talented guitarist and song writer. Keep an eye out for him...he thoroughly rocks!
I remember when this was released, and what this song is about. The great flood of the mississippi, St. Genevieve, a town, was completely taken away, from the river. Great dedication. Rock on Son Volt!!! Loves it.
Old Mines is nearby, home of my ancestors. I knew he story. And Jay rules. Great song!!~
