Overexposure to certain types of conformal coating can cause a variety of negative health effects. Engineering controls should be put in place to help prevent exposure above the recommended limits set by various health and safety organizations.

The MSDS of a popular conformal coating spray, KonForm® SR, recommends the following for work/hygienic practices: "Good general ventilation should be sufficient to control airborne levels. Local exhaust ventilation may be necessary to control any air contaminants to within their TLVs during the use of this product. If vapor concentration exceeds TLV, use NIOSH approved organic vapor cartridge respirator [...]."

One example of local exhaust ventilation for conformal coating spray are the benchtop Ductless Spray Hoods featured in this video. Sentry Air offers 30", 40", 50", and 60" wide models. Custom designed spray hoods are also available (including ESD-Safe models).
