The only good things I see that Polk did that was good, in my opinion was support Jacksonian economic policies and prevent Henry Clay from winning the Presidency by defeating him in the 1844 election. Other than that this guy in my opinion was an utter and total failure as a President.

I enjoyed your study of Polk, just as I enjoyed your previous works. What's next?

Really enjoying the book...the book connects the major political players from Jackson to Buchannan. Showing how Polk change the role of President when he goes to Congress for the approval of war vs. Mexico was great!!!! I can’t wait to share this information with my students in US history class!

Henry Clay also gave his son away to Polk’s rapacious territorial appetites. The poor kid was bayoneted by the Mexicans deep inside Mexico. As Henry Clay stated” It is Mexico that is defining her fire-sides…not we.” I am a student in LA and I have as much respect for Polk as I have for Hitler. Simply disgusting
Actually, the power to declare war is given to Congress by Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution. The twentieth-century examples of presidents waging undeclared wars really starts with Polk almost bullying Congress into recognizing, in Polk's words, that a state of war already existed. Another example: Polk's the first president to produce an executive budget, even if Congress then, as now, paid it little attention.

Interesting. Thank you! Best of luck with your biography. Just a quick question: Even if Polk had lost the election, would not the territories of Oregon, Texas, and California ultimately have become part of the U.S. anyway? I mean who else might have taken possession of them?

Ultimately, probably, but Great Britain might have controlled Oregon at least as far south as the Columbia River (western half of Washington state) and Mexico might have held on to some of southern California, Arizona, and New Mexico. In the end, it was really the large of numbers of American settlers that overran these places.
