a great many theists are simply impervious to evidence or rational debate ,these can be ppl who are otherwise open minded and quite reasonable but ..its like their faith is in a secure ,case hardened ,fire proof section of their brain and it simply cannot be rooted out ..period .

@Zentz29 OHHHH GOOOD hURrlrrrllll. Fucking gross! just imagine what that would look like.
-
@CIAtheist that sounds pretty rough. I just don't think anyone is utterly beyond changing their mind. If it was me I would take any opportunity she gave me to attempt a rational discussion, as long as you're not getting like beaten or disowned or something. I don't think there is anything wrong with disagreement, but I think anytime someone shies away from discussing a disagreement is a missed learning opportunity.
-
@CIAtheist they may say that logic means nothing to them but I wonder if they'd say the same about reality or truth. If a theist says they care about truth (the real definition) you can maneuver them into some very uncomfortable positions. I almost wish I had your family, I guarantee they would want the conversation over before I did. I just think "agree to disagree" is kind of a stupid cliche. However, the sentiment of appreciating disagreement rather than hating it is one I support.

My favourite question for religious people is ask them if they believe in hell.
If Hell exists then what about people who never have a chance to live? Do they go to hell or get a free pass? If they go to hell then god is a tyrant. If they get a free pass then it's better to euthanize babies before they have a chance to sin and risk spending eternity in hell.

Recently I had a talk with a non-church-going believer who is a friend of mine. I pressed very hard on the point that his belief was a hypocrisy, that he had no good reason to believe about this one thing: God. I was not rude, but I also wouldn't back down. I'm not sure how my approach will work in the long run, of being as insistent on the point as I was. I guess I'll have to wait and see. He was really shaken, I think.

@kyebean I totally get that, but BTW i forgot to mention that I am Mexican, and that is practically the rule, my soon to be wife isn't that religious either but that type of weding is the social convention. I am totally atheist humanist, she still thinks there is something out there. And here in Mexico catholic faith is the rule, recently some crazy southamerican christians preachers have been smuggling in a pseudo catholic christian that soon it will become evalgelical christians.. crazy
-
@kyebean Yeah, what i tell people is that "Just because you have the right to your opinion does not mean that your opinion is right."
-
@luccaskunk You'd be surprised how many people don't even understand what facts are, or accept that they exist. Way to many people take the lazy fucking pathetic position of thinking that everyone's arbitrary, contradicting opinions are somehow equally valid and then they throw science right in there with that sad mire.
Matt is a great spokesman for atheism.

"agree to disagree" such a pet peeve of mine. People who say that should be placed in a ditch.
