Christianity used to be violent. Let's not forget the Inquisition, where people were tortured and executed simply because they believed something slightly different. There were also those little things called the Crusades - ridiculous attempts to capture a city that is holy to ALL Abrahamic religions. Yes, they resulted in the Renaissance, but also in the Turks taking over Byzantium because Catholic knights hated Orthodox Chrisians more than Muslims.

Serpico, I believe it was Hitchens who said something like (I'm paraphrasing) "the reason Islam is more violent than Christianity is not because it's worse (or that Christianity is better), it is simply a *younger* religion and has had less time to be beaten down by reason and positive social pressures into something more moderate" - they're both worshipping the same god, but Christianity has adapted to be less socially abrasive in many areas in order to survive and flourish. It's a smart virus.

Thank you, I've been thinking about that a lot myself lately.

It makes sense.

A lot of things about religion make more sense if you look at it like a 'mindvirus' or 'memetic infection'.

There are other memeviruses and memevirus complexes like astrology or lolcats or songs you can't get out of your head (then you end up humming them or whatever and spreading it to others), but religion is by far the most advanced and most harmful that's ever emerged, with a myriad of different strains. Thankfully the same cure works for all of them: teaching critical thinking to children.

Easy to understand... This is easy to be on the left of someone who do everythink to be on the right and stay on the right of everybody whatever happen. The problem, is one of them might hit a wall.
