Philip Sparke Biography

He was born in London and studied composition, trumpet and piano at the Royal College of Music, where he gained an ARCM.

It was at the College that his interest in bands arose. He played in the College wind orchestra and also formed a brass band among the students, writing several works for both ensembles. At that time, his first published works appeared - Concert Prelude (brass band) and Gaudium (wind band). A growing interest in his music led to several commissions, his first major one being for the Centennial Brass Band Championships in New Zealand The Land of the Long White Cloud.

Further commissions followed from individual bands, various band associations and the BBC, for whom he three times won the EBU New Music for Band Competition (with Slipstream, Skyrider and Orient Express). He has written for brass band championships in New Zealand, Switzerland, Holland, Australia and the UK, including three times for the National Finals at the Albert Hall, and his test pieces are constantly in use wherever brass bands can be found.

A close association with banding in Japan led to a commission (Celebration) from and eventual recording of his music with the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. This opened the door worldwide to his wind band music and led to several commissions, particularly from the United States. In 1996 the US Air Force Band commissioned and recorded Dance Movements, which won the prestigious Sudler Prize in 1997. In 2005 Music of the Spheres won the National Band Association/William D. Revelli Memorial Band Composition Contest.

His conducting and adjudicating activities have taken him to most European countries, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the USA. He runs his own publishing company, Anglo Music Press, which he formed in May 2000. In September 2000 he was awarded the Iles Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians for his services to brass bands.

  • is this from just one high school? what does honor band mean? i'm really impressed!!!

  • Yes this is Duncanville HS from Duncanville, Texas. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the way TX high band works but most high school varsity bands submit recordings every other year to be judged. The top band or winner of the contest is refered to as the "honor band". If you win you can't compete again the next year you have to skip a round. This was from 04-05. Duncanville has just won again in 2008-09. The winners usually give a concert the next year at the Texas Music Educators Asociation

  • This sounds lika a fine university band - amazing tone quality, excellent intonation and voiceing. Congratulations! I typed in William Revelli and this popped up - Revelli would have been impressed!

  • Thanks for the nice comments! I really miss playing in this group.

  • Do you still play, though?

  • you know it! I play all the time... actually i'm practicing right now haha. though i'm getting more into jazz now.

  • I'm jealous of Texas and their awesome HS bands.. we're playing this song this year.

  • @began1421 I whole-heartedly disagree. Once it gets too fast, it loses the character of the piece. Now, the Bayern Police Band definitely plays it too slow, but I believe that this is a perfect tempo.

  • It was really good, but would be better at a faster tempo.

  • I play the cornett. and I know how to play angry birds theme! it's fun I must say!

  • best march in the world. We are playing this for our band at Gregory-Portland HS, we played it for the first time ever today and i knew it well because i got my music and took home and played it along with this master piece :)

  • @turnne What a lovely thing to say. I was in that band, I'm glad that people enjoy this music. :)

  • Wow, what great pitch and tone. It's not "affected" in any way. I didn't know they had risen back up to their 80s stature in Symphonic competition. Bravo!

  • Hi again - I have finally learned how to post slideshows - please view U of Michigan Symphony Band on Tour - 1961.Revelli is conducting Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral by Wagner. I think this is the first posting of the band. Enjoy and tell your friends!

  • this was GREAT.

we played this my senior year in the spring of '08 =]

  • Well, like I said, TX is super-competitive with music, and a lot of people (including myself, from time to time) have said something along the lines of "a game's not worth playing if you can't win."

I have slowly started picking my horn back up and doing some fundamentals, and I hope to finish my music degree someday. I just need to change my mindset towards it.
