This the 2007 fall salmon run in full swing. We went to look at it on October 17th, 2007. This is one of the fantastic things about Toronto. All one needs to do to see this, is take the subway to the Old Mill, walk north past the bridge towards the first dam, and hope that the salmon will be there.

  • What Type of salmon is this?

  • I'm not a salmon expert, so I don't know. However, based on what I have read about restocking salmon in Lake Ontario, the majority of them are probably atlantic salmon.

  • is it possible to fish on that river??

  • Yes, it is possible. I always see some people fishing there.

  • When is the best time to see the salmon run?

  • From my personal experience, from about October 10 to October 20. Unfortunately, this isn't an exact science. It depends on too many factors to accurately predict.

  • That is awesome.

  • @MizRoxy2005 In the film, none did. However, it does happen. Unfortunately, they usually have to try many times before succeeding. On top of that, when they make it, they usually hardly disturb the water and can therefore be hard to spot.

As a result, I have not yet succeeded in getting a successful jump on camera.

  • @BartVanBockstaele the atlantic salmon being stocked are still very small and do not migrate upstream yet, these salmon are chinook's and coho.

I caught a 30 pounder at duffins creek today, good way to end the season.

  • Did any of this Salmon successfully jump the Dam? In the film, looks as if none did - very sad!

  • @BartVanBockstaele atlantic salmon are very rare, stocking continues but returns arent very progressive. These salmon are chinooks ( the most predominant in the great lakes) .

  • They are atlantic salmon and yes you can fish this river

  • @tomphish1212 Lots of salmon and trout can make it upstream shortly after rainfall. Rain will increase the river's water levels, making it easier for salmon to make the jump. What you're seeing in the video is crystal clear water indicating low water river conditions, so during this time, it's harder for salmon to make the jump.

  • I cant believe city of toronto hasnt found the few dollars to modify this dam for better passage for fish! ...

  • hi i wana go fishing there so cen i fishing there? and how i go there i live stelles and keele were is good place ?

  • It is the cruelty of nature that helped Darwin formulate his theory of evolution. I agree that it is very cruel indeed.

That said, I guarantee that quite a few salmon do make it. That is precisely why the dam has those little stairs. They are designed to make it somewhat easier for the salmon to reach their goal, without making it easier than nature intended.

All that suffering makes me sad as well, and most scientists I know, have to learn to accept this suffering.
