from newteevee: If you have some tinfoil handy, now might be a good time to fashion a hat. At the Digital Living Room conference today, Gerard Kunkel, Comcast's senior VP of user experience, told me the cable company is experimenting with different camera technologies built into devices so it can know who's in your living room.

Kunkel also spoke on camera with me about fixing bad Comcast user experiences, the ongoing BitTorrent battle and VOD. But he mostly towed the corporate line on these issues (the monitoring your living room came up after my camera was put away).

If industry wants to change.fine. but it shouldnt be a federal law. but now that we find out they want to put cameras in cable boxes.shows me there true motive. to look and pry into every inch of our lives/government. teamed up with media to further control our lives.how nice

  • Did I miss something...?

  • Really, what a moronic title. This rumor goes back to the '80s when people found out there is an "electronic eye" in the cable box to receive the IR remote signal. There simply isn't enough upstream excess bandwidth to waste it on streaming spy video.

  • @mcelfreshiii Total crap. Digital is only better in 'certain' applications. This is all about making more money! Watch U-571 in a digital format. you'll notice distiguishing lines between the depths of the ocean. You won't get that on analog. Cell phones are a joke! even walkie-talkies have better commo because you can talk over the other person without getting cut off. This is all about getting more customers in a bandwidth. Research it for yourself.

  • @smithdsmit let me explain from a cable tech as to why this is beneficial. Analog signal takes 6MHz of bandwidth for ONE channel. With digital, you can compress the image, to bring better quality with less bandwidth. Each EIA used can hold 12-14 cable channels per 6MHz. 3-4 with HD. There are only so many frequencies between the sub-band and the hyper band. The main reason to switch was 9/11. Emergency calls are now all analog, and commercial use is all digital. So there is no comm stop.

  • Usage based billing... We "provide ALL of our subscribers the best possible..." “unlimited, always on access at blazing fast speeds.” WAKE UP !!!! Even your son knows he will get a call when he reaches 251GB not explicitly mentioned in the contract...
