A ruby-throated hummingbird tries to feed during the landfall of hurricane Katrina. We live in south Alabama, a 3hr drive from New Orleans. It got ugly here as well, but nothing compared to New Orleans and the rest of the Alabama/Mississippi coastline. Pardon my husband in the background, he's getting the dogs inside. A pretty bad squall is about to bear down on us. The hummer takes about as much as it can before the wind forces it away.

  • True. These little birds have to eat every 15 to 20 minutes to stay alive due to their high metabolism rate.

After Katrina, we saw a boom in our local population because of the destruction of their habitat along the coast. We live inland about 100 miles. We've been lucky so far and have escaped the worst from these storms.

    Thanks for watching!

  • I've read that hummingbirds are essentially about 1 and 1/2 hours away from starving to death when they are out foraging...ie. their typical energy storage is only good for that time. So what you are showing is a real life and death struggle for the bird.
