Videos on the web should work like the web itself: Dynamic, full of links, maps and information that can be edited and updated live. Mozilla Foundation COO Ryan Merkley demos Popcorn Maker, a new web-based tool for easy video remixing.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Ridiculous.
The idea of having images updating alongside your video removes any integrity of documentation.
I don't like this.

Seems like just another gimmicky app to add to the already crowded noise of our online culture.

I was using Popcorn the other day and I couldn't figure out how do you actually make the map go to the background?

I can understand how this would be cause for contention. I wonder if certain links or data are noted as more relevant over time based on content tags, like Google's search results. Let's not discount it yet!

I can tell you in a word why this won't work: Penis.
The moment a video about "Green Apple Cupcakes" becomes popular, you know 4chan is going to rush to flickr and upload thousands of penis pictures tagged with "Green" "Apple" and "Cupcakes."
Unless every video is constrained to private libraries (at which point how's that any different than what we have now?) then the moment a video reaches the top ten list on Popcorn, it's gonna be nothing but pictures, links, and music about penises.

Great idea, to pause the main video at some point and just check something more interesting than showed.

I am sure many, many advertisers would agree with you.

(part 2) That's not to say that I don't share your concerns over sue-happy mega-corporations with considerable sway in Congress obliterating the economic livelihood of us citizens living on meager salaries. (On the contrary, I find copyright and patent systems to be an immoral use of the power of coercion monopolized by general governments. Not a fan of trademarks either, too easy to abuse. Instead, if intent to defraud via name association can be proven, then prove it and charge the fraud.)

I was just about to reply to your comment telling you about how much I agreed with you, then point to Pinterest as evidence... but I found an interesting article on the subject at the University of Minesota's website (first link after googling "Pinterest ToS copyright"). As it turns out, the core of the issue is that Pinterest straight up copies the image. If the images were dynamically loaded from their originally hosted source on the web (presumably the copyright holder)... Very interesting...

It's annoying to hear terms such as "remixable," "web content," and "free" when you can't even whistle a tune without being sued by the record company

I was disagreeing more with the overtone of your message. It gave off the impression of "Cool idea, but stupid and pointless" Although you said it would be best for academic, you associated that word with mundane. Called it "distracting" and likened it to the ability of opening another tab in a browser.
