On this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited, David Freiburger meets up with Pro Touring legend Mark Stielow to compare old and new Camaros head to head. Mark Stielow is a GM engineer with a long history of building vintage, street-worthy Camaros with amazing handling prowess. His latest is the Red Devil, a '69 model powered by a 427ci, supercharged LS9 that tops 750 hp and 800 lb-ft. It runs a six-speed trans and complete suspension from Detroit Speed, and has won a number of shootouts with similarly built Pro Touring cars. But can his modified muscle car outrun the technology of the Magnetic Ride suspension on the new, 580hp, 2012 Camaro ZL1? We head to GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, Michigan to find out.

In 1980 I bought a 67 Firebird from a guy in Compton for 300 bucks. Took out the 400 put in a 455, decked the block, stock compression TRW forged pistons, Milled the heads true and cleaned them up with grinding tools on a drill. All pure Pontiac parts... Ram Air 4 cam, tri power, blueprinted the motor, turbo 400 trans with a dash three Transgo kit and variable switch pitch stator hooked up to a solenoid switch near the shifter, Anson ground grabbers, 90/10 shocks all for about 2k or less

My bad, the RD has a 7.0 engine in it, not a 6.2. However, that does not change the fact that both engines are (at least in theory) emissions-compliant.

Did you not see that the Red Devil has the same basic supercharged LSA as the ZL1? It's not a matter of emissions, just how it's been tuned. The ZL1 is bone-stock, the Red Devil is not.

this episode is not comparing equals

the ZL1 has the new EPA standards to comply with, the 69, DOES NOT. I.E. More HP because of less restrictions.
