20JUL10 2250UTC

Matt and I made contact (QSO) with Col. Douglas Wheelock onboard the ISS (International Space Station) operating amateur radio NA1SS. What a thrill however brief! We were standing in our back yard in Portland, Oregon using a Yaesu VX-8R handheld and a 2-meter Arrow Yagi antenna. We are going to try for future QSO attempts with NA1SS.

  • Nice work Doc! That would make a nice QSL card. I have never seen the word "cool" used so often in comments. You can also work AO-51, an orbiting repeater, and talk to others on the earth at great distances.

  • @Gorntz - well, I will let the cat out of the bag . . . that will be my first QSL card . . . they are at the printers now ;-)

I do have plans on working AO-51 in the future.

  • Good for you!

NA1SS has a nice QSL card. You should send yours and get theirs.

I worked the station a year or two ago. I was sitting in carpool line, waiting to pick up my son. It was just my mobile radio with the 5/8 wave omni. Easy.
