Thought I'd have a go at a hand-drawn rotoscope style animation. Rotoscoping is an animation technique in which animators trace over live-action film movement, frame by frame. There are 175 separate drawings/frames in this.

The music is a shorter version of a piece I made called 'Exit Gravity' which is on an instrumental album I made as part of my band 'Muscovy' here: http://muscovy.bandcamp.com/album/instrumental

  • @aaronaton well it's good to know you've learnt something from your degree, but that's why i titled it 'rotoscope' because that's what it is, tracing over footage. maybe 'hand drawn' is misleading?

  • @MattblahMatt depends what you want to call 'hand-drawn'. i traced each image, but by hand.

  • Wow

  • Very nice work must have taken ages! Did some myself the other day. Printed out 90 frames took me 7 hours to do 35 hand drawn frames then shot them on a rostrum. Check it if you can. Feedbacks always good

  • @timelapse19 Just because you trace something doesn't mean it looks perfect. To be good at tracing you have to be good at drawing. Otherwise the tracing would look like crap duh. This video is an example of good tracing and drawing.

  • dude, this is awesome

  • Wow~ Nice!

  • Hi,

I am working on a school project that requires animation, and while I was doing research as to how this can be done, I came across your video. I really love the idea of doing all the art by hand, rather than on a computer. I feel fairly confident as an artist, but could you please explain to me the technical aspects. It would be greatly appreciated.

  • @timelapse19 Did you draw these on paper and scan in each one? Did you have to use a projector to to get the image down for you to roto over? Im going to do something like this soon, but I plan on doing 90% of it without using a computer. Yours looks good for the time spent.
