VIII. Duo. Larghetto (Fac, ut portem Christi mortem)

16
Fac ut portem Christi mortem,
Passionis eius sortem
Et plagas recolere.
17
Fac me plagis vulnerati,
Cruce hac inebriari,
Ob amorem Filii.
16
Let me bear the death of Christ
Share the destiny of his passion
And commemorate his wounds
17
Plagued let me be with his wounds
Inebriated by the cross
Because of love for the Son

Drahomíra Tikalová (1915-1997)

A soloist at the National Theatre in Prague in the years 1943-84, she originally studied medicine at Brno University. She was led to choose a career in music, however, by her remarkable talent, honed by private studies under Theodor Czernik and Ludmila Neumannová, followed by a silver medal in a singing competition in Vienna (1938). She accepted her first engagement in Brno, from which place Václav Talich quickly brought her to Prague where her first role was Vendulka in Smetanas The Kiss. There followed a series of younger womens roles in Czech operas. Her characters gradually matured into model creations, especially her Mařenka, Rusalka, Anežka (The Two Widows) and Katya Kabanova, as well as Aida, Amelie, Elisabeth (Tannhäuser), Senta, Tosca, Halka, Tatiana, Lisa (The Queen of Spades), and Chrysothemis from the international repertoire. The finesse, nobility and unmistakeable timbre of her resonant soprano together with her ardent emotional expression and outstanding technique remained closed within the borders of Czechoslovakia without hope of performing on the European scene, as was the case with her entire generation. The rare occasions when she and the National Theatre Opera Company have guest performances abroad proved that she was the peer of the leading singers of Europe. She recorded complete performances of The Bartered Bride, The Two Widows, Katya Kabanova and Svätopluk. Among her best works in the Czech Radio archives are complete recordings of Vanda, Debora and Libuše.
