@gscbmmd .....well until we tell our own stories, the dancer imitating our dance will dance it in a way that is crooked.

There are many different forms of Divine Priests ( high priests ) in Ghana. Each divine priest ( Okomfo) is named according to his official duties. For example in the Ashanti region, most of the priests are Tano Akomfo. ( Tano, which is a river deity is a special reference to all the Akomfo whose primary deities are from rivers and specialty are to catch and exorcise people who have witchcraft.) There are also other group of Akomfo known as Suman Akomfo, also known as Tingare or Tigare Akomfo.

okomfo means high priest indeed. but bcos he is involved with the occult, the term "witch - doctor" can be LOOSELY applied to him.
-
To make matters worse we too often and too quickly accept these erroneous definitions of ourselves.

In truth a witch is something that is found in western culture. The term is then projected on to other cultures and my not necessarily fit. Ordinary folks are not always able to articulate these cultural difference, and where African traditions are concerned, many of our traditional cultural phenomena have been defined by monolinguistic English speakers who do not have the knowledge or interest in developing correct classifications in English.

Ignorance is sad.
Okomfo means high priest, not witch doctor. Get it right.

That's probably true. I don't know what the word literally means in Twi. But Ghanaians would often call them witch doctors, and I never heard them use the term high priest. So I don't think its necessarily incorrect.
Several of the Okomfo we met, including Nana Jesse pictured here, collected the coats of witches that they had caught and run out of town. So while they could be described as high priests, they do a fair amount of witch hunting as well.
Anyway, no offense meant of course.
