Clever how the analogue world works, isn't it? I sure hope nothing spoils the digital wonderland we're living in today, because all that knowledge will be lost, and we'll be doomed to another dark ages (no pun intended).
The sign on Times Square utilized a slightly different technique to deliver the animated signs who's content was animated by Otto Mesmer. The short animated "films" were shot on black & white film. They were run through a projector that shined onto a light sensitive photo receptor that translated points on the screen to the huge sign on Times Square as lightbulbs going on & off in correspondence to the light & shadows of the film.
New York ? Nope - it's the sign that dominated the Chicago lakefront vista at the north end of Grant Park until the Prudential Building was built in 1955. You can see the Wrigley Building in the background as well.
This is a fantastic film, about one of the most famous signs in new york in 1935. If you look closely in many old movies on TCM you can see this sign in the back ground.
