Charlotte's first banjo video! (She has been playing a month now). This is a tune we wrote named after Laura's fish and his favourite place in the pond! The fiddle is tuned to (low to high) DDAD, the banjo is aDADF#. The banjo is Charlotte's new toy - she got it off eBay and so doesn't know much about it... anyone who knows anything about 'TR' banjos - please tell us!

  • Fine well played tune.

Your right hand technique looks to be right on from what I could see from the video. Anyone in particular that you've learned from?

About the TR banjo: It might be a Bales Banjo. Check out the website for Bales Banjos. They make a what they call a 'Turbo Rim'. That might be abbreviated as TR. Long shot.

Thanks for posting. I'll be looking forward to hearing more.

  • Hello! Thanks for the help. I looked up Bales Banjos and it's not that - TR is the makers name or initial or something as it's inlayed in the headstock. I learned mostly from youtube (search Rocket Science banjo and there are 3 videos) and then I was shown a few things by the banjo player with a great UK old time band called the Buffalo Gals.

    Charlotte :)

  • This is superb... excellent banjo Charlotte... i was the same with a mando after a couple of goes :)... see you at The Dufferin!! Oh and Laura... yourt fiddle was 'blistering'!!

  • One month? Man, she is talented.

  • Wow one month it took me forever to learn how to play chords on the guitar !:D

    nice job

  • Rocket Science Banjo was an excellent choice for you to learn from. Since you already have so much stringed instrument experience you're on your way with clawhammer right out of the gate.

I'll look into hearing those Buffalo Gals!

Hope you're able to find out about TR.

  • #2: If you would like any more information on the subject you can PM me and I will provide you with a link to one of the worlds' leading experts on banjos, their history and origin.

He charges $10 fee for identifying the banjo and his knowledge is extraordinary.

Alternatively I can provide you with some links which you will be able to research yourself.

Love and peace to you ... good stuff for 1 month: you're very talented!

    5*

  • "TR" stands for "Tone Ring". The subject of tone rings is a complex one, but, the quality of the tone ring, its' metallurgical compostion and design are of paramount importance in determining the quality and sound of a banjo.

I was fortunate enough to own a banjo that had a pre-2nd World War cast and plated tone ring which was the best sounding instrument that I and mnay others had ever heard. Unfortunately it was stolen and I've never found one like it.

I don't play any more, just guitar.

  • Great stuff - thanks for posting such a great a new video.

    Rik.

  • nice chops... and just 1 month?! :)
