In 1952 , Gunter Hauk started at the German Academy of Music in Berlin to study musicology, which he quickly changed the composition studies. Among his professors Georg Knepler, Harry Goldschmidt, Nathan Notowicz, who was then only 22 years old Günter Kochan and in 1954, Rudolf Wagner-Régeny. While the study produced the first works: A Piano Sonata, Two Movements for String Quartet, Double Concerto for clarinet, horn and string orchestra and chamber music in 1956 for wind, percussion and piano. After graduating in 1957 Hauk musical director at Berlin's Maxim Gorki Theater and this year was also his Cappriccio for orchestra. From 1957 to 1959 he completed the master class in composition with Hanns Eisler, and from that time also its transformations are for piano.

Later Hauk wrote primarily film and stage music, like this: Rummelplatz, Reise um die Erde in 80 Tagen, Unternehmen Ölzweig und Ein Sommernachtstraum für die Bühne; Der Moorhund, Die Jagd nach dem Stiefel, as film music for the DEFA and for the German television broadcasting
