Florence is all excited about her new bible thumping boyfriend Buzz Thatcher who is a devout Christian and insists on Florence leading a strict Christian life. When he proposes marriage she happily accepts. However, his religious attitudes give Louise a bad feeling about the whole thing. Meanwhile, an agency sends a new maid over and she proves to be a hard worker ... to the extreme.
Unlike Norman Lear's other sitcoms; topical, political and edgy content was gradually phased out as the series progressed.

Marla Gibbs was given her own spin-off, Checking In, where Florence went to work as an executive at a hotel. As a precaution in case the show failed, Gibbs would be allowed to return to "The Jeffersons". Roseanna Christiansen was hired as Florence's replacement, Carmen. When the spin-off was canceled after four episodes, Gibbs returned to the show.
