Bad crash from the looks of it, too. The foreground victim's, face is peeled forward and loose like a smashed melon of some sort, his leg is broken and bent horribly to the side. Can't say his comrade looks much better.

@Halftrack99 The German pilots weren't issued parachutes until very late in the war. But you're right about the balloonists; all of them had 'chutes.

it a choise between burn to death, or fall to death, brave man to choose to jump,

most had less 8 hour flight training i read some where don't rember where though

@condoritohuevoduro At least jumping allowed him to live the balance of the time it took to hit the ground, then die as quickly as any self inflicted gunshot wound.
