The opening logo for Gainsborough Pictures, 1926-48 (I think).

This one is for Caravan (1946), starring Stewart Granger, Anne Crawford, Jean Kent and Dennis Price. One of the famous "Gainsborough Melodramas".

  • It's based on Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806) who created that style of hat!

  • @linda3527 Nice to know, since The Man in Grey was a Gainsborough film - and that story has echoes of hers!

  • I imagine it's based on Thomas Gainsborough's prtrait of Sarah Siddons - does anyone know for sure?

  • @davie12 Plus I guess they figured that a pretty woman smiling at the audience would be nicer than a roaring lion.

  • LOL... it's a bit like the MGM one, but with a woman with a big hat instead of a lion!! Cheaper I guess!
