Meh, fuck that story.
I am frankly disgusted by it.
I don't know if it is true or not, but it should not effect your opinion on the way this music was written.
He is a skilled song writer and does not need the help of some ridiculous story saying he recorded an entire album in a "cabin."
Either way, you may be right. Perhaps it was his distaste for what music is turning into... but I would say there are just as many using this genre for fame as any other.
There is more to it IMO.

Listen to his early work (Hazeltons EP, Self Record). I think he likes the simplicity because that's where it came from.

Also think about how much useless ornamentation exists in pop music. I think he was probably sick of that (hence the need to write songs in a cabin in the middle of nowhere during winter).

Ya, thats the truth for sure.
He makes a pretty impressive piece of music from just him and a out of tune guitar, but the way its written, and the effects he occasionally use do play a role.
Predominantly, I would say it is the way he writes though, that delivers the impact, not necessarily his ability to play or sing.
But I still wonder, why, with all the talent he has, does he choose to work with so little...
I suppose no one has that answer other than Justin, though =/

I really like the feel of his music. He does a lot with very little, musically speaking.
