Every vote counts: close race in Ukraine's presidential election

With more than 80% of the votes counted in Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovich has 48.54% to the vote, and less than 4% behind is Yulia Timoshenko with 45.8%.
Both presidential hopefuls say they are sure of victory and the blame game that was a permanent feature of the election campaign looks set to continue.
From 08:00 in the morning Ukrainians flocked to polling stations nationwide. There had been fears over low turnout, but by midday more than half the number of eligible voters cast their ballots, thus making voting valid. Amid what has been a nervous campaign, both candidates were calm and optimistic.
