Britain At War In Colour - 02 - Beginning Of The End
Episode 2 of 3.
Documentary and newsreel film of World War II has been seen before, but Britain at War - In Colour is different. Much of the footage here was shot unofficially by servicemen and civilians as a personal record of events unfolding, giving the three programmes a more inward, human quality. "Darkest Hour" covers the period from the government's failed policy of appeasement, through the months of misfortune and failure, to the turn of the tide in North Africa late in 1942. "The Beginning of the End" traces the successes in Asia and the Atlantic, through the D-Day landings, to victory in Europe in April 1945. "Unknown Warriors" takes a chronological overview, through the letters and diaries of, and recent interviews with a dozen people caught up in the conflict. It makes for a detailed, informal and moving insight into the impact of war on those who live through it.

@dbee84 Your 28 and 80% of Berlin was still destroyed? Let me get this streight. When you went to Berlin at, let us say, one year old in 1985 80% of Berlin was STILL destroyed. I was in Berlin in the 1960s and it wasn't STILL 80% destroyed even then. Tell me I'm misunderstanding you because I dont want to call you a liar.

Poor Berlin civilians at 15:00. I went to visit Berlin, 80%of the city was destroyed and civilians killed, it wasnt their fault the country was taken over by a psicopath either.

most japs dont know about nanking, let alone burma.. some of the elders know about nanking, but often, they just nod, & when i ask them burma, & india, they say nothing.. change the topic.. we japanese are, cynical, and stupid.. we call ourselves pacifists today, yet we sent troops to Iraq, have a military base in Africa, have military aircraft fly over the sky everyday.. we openly flaunt the revised Constitution.. and what do the young say of the nation? pridefully ignorant, or disillusioned.

@Eurofighter19 NP :-) and FM Kesselring would probably have agreed with what you say about Malta: RN submarine and RAF torpedo bomber activity from the Island took a severe toll on axis shipping. I believe FMK lobbied hard for the implementation of " Operation Herkules" a plan to capture the Island, but Hitler agreed with FM Rommel to use the resources to attack Egypt instead.

@clovenrick
Malta was critical for the entire Allied effort in the Mediterranean.
People living in the island surely showed bravery against a formidable opponents as the German and Italian forces were.

Thank you for the suggestion and my apologies for coming off a bit defensive in my previous reply to you.
