@mauricedelacroix I saw Baltsa-Shicoff "Carmen" - a video of Madrid premiere (1999, I think) unfortunately the quality is too imperfect and the performance is not complete. And still the impression is GREAT. Especially the final scene - I find it simply genial...Baltsa was about 55 then. Shicoff - 50. They made a real chef`d oevre together.

@Otellogv thank you - so good to read your comments about Baltsa. Very exact precise words! I`m sure she`s one of the greatest singing actresses - maybe simply the best. This duett from Milan concert is really a treasure... And - I`d say, she makes her partners to act better than usually. Even such as Domingo. He always looks a better actor with her - than for ex. with Obrastsova. The action effect AS A WHOLE - that`s the main thing for Baltsa.

This is what opera is all about! Where do you find a Carmen with fire & passion who understands how to interpret this character. She knows she is about to die and I feel that Baltsa really brings this over. She is fearless and spits outs these phrases with increasing abandon. Listen to her building up the tension between her spitting out 'Jamais!' at 01:58 to her 'Tiens!!' at 08:36. Wow! Also, Domingo is pretty damn fantastic too; secure in his singing and a great partner to Baltsa. Brava!!
