@jaketaz I agree with you, especially the Bostridge part. While Ian Bostridge has an extremely beautiful and clear voice, I always find his recordings of Schubert lieder kinda boring, he still sounds pretty good in mullerin but boring to hell in winterreise to me. People always says mullerin is more for tenors I guess is because they never heard Quasthoff sings mullerin. Wunderlich is better in Wiegenlied, Dieskau is better in Der Jager, but in general I think Quasthoff is the best mullerin.
Quasthoff understands real lyric diction. He does more than just speak the language correctly, he sings every sound of every word. All the while he maintains a round, consistent sound belying a good technique. People like Bostridge could take a lesson from Quasthoff. Delicacy is not an issue of "vibrato or no vibrato", it's an issue of solid technique and knowledge of the music, as always.
@Eurofrank1 Also, when singing song cycles such as this it is common to use the score in performance. Even if he were to perform a single song from the cycle it wouldn't necessarily be unusual to have the score in front of him simply because that's common practice in performance.
@Eurofrank1 This is not only a recital, but also a recording. It is totally normal that you sing from notes there as you have to follow directoral advice and other hints (when to look where, camera positions...) that are taken down in your score. I'm pretty sure that a famous and professional singer as Quasthoff is doesn't need the score for memorizing text or tune.
I´ve always been of the opinion that if you can´t learn songs from memory, you shouldn´t sing them at all. This is standard repertoire, so what the hell is he playing at?? Schäm´ dich doch!!
@Eurofrank1
There are plenty of recordings on Youtube of Quasthoff singing from memory, and you know that.
