Great video! Showing how different we used to fence "back in the day." Much like when they banned the crossover in sabre.
Personally I prefer the new timing yet its still flawed...15 milliseconds is too long and accounts for lots of straight attacks bouncing off. They could've changed the tips to have more resistance and travel time like in epee coupled with 12-14 millisecond contact time.
@mclhill Yeah, I would have to revise my earlier statements on the "new" timing. Ota and some of the Chinese fencers, among others, are very dynamic and fun to watch.
@tangoseven70 True, I get a little bored watching baldini say, even though he's clearly one of the current best, but I think ota is still a very good watch, always active.
I can see what the video is trying to achieve but to be fair the 2005 video I think should have only shown the hits themselves like the 2002 so we could all see the direct comparison of how the scoring of the hits has actually changed. Interesting though
I certainly prefer the older timings. Although matches in recent times are incredible contests of endurance and focus, they lack variety and spontaneity. Who wants to watch counter-attack after counter-attack? IMO what should have been done to improve foil in 2004 was to retrain directors to stop calling bent arm preparations as attacks & give more precedence to an extended arm. This was not likely, of course, for one reason, because the fencers were becoming faster, and harder to judge.
IMHO Vanni uses the implied threat of a flick to dramatic effect. He infrequently finishes with a flick though. Wessel appears not to know where to focus his defence.
I think the old timings made for a faster and more aggressive game. Foil has become way slow since 2005. AFAIK, it's even slower than in the 1980s, when flicks were rare.

No doubt its made it different. Unsure whether one is better than the other. You have to fence differently either one.
But i prefer new timings. Hits have to mean more and you have to be more prepared for counter attacks.

the italian guy didnt even prepare for any straight line attacks, they were all flicks. the time change makes sense, but i can still land flicks.
