This is from a Rare Southbank Show Special documentary.I don't know if it ever aired. It was made to precede the arrival of the first ever British production of ST in 1980-81.The highlights are large sections of Stephen Sondheim himself discussing the writing of the show from the piano at his home.He details and plays many of the numbers from the score! The Original Director Hal Prince is Featured throughout as well. The London Sweeney is Denis Quilley, and Mrs.Lovett is Played by Sheila Hancock. The Playwright Christopher Bond is also on hand.Enjoy.

  • Is anyone else watching this with their head in their palm off to one side and a big, open, stupid, dreamy smile on their face in awe? Not that I am or anything like that...

  • And also, I remember I performed Worst Pies and it is... hard... O.O Not only is the music fast and jumpy, but I found it hard saying the little comments and the whole 'fly on the pie' thing because I didn't do it with any props or tables. It is the craziest song I've ever sung. Props to everyone who can sing it!

  • Sondheim. You genius :D

  • Oh wow, this is so fantastic! Where did you find this footage? I would love to buy the video of this

  • @CasualtyFan101 yea, in the movie they changed some lyrics in order to better fit what was written for the screenplay for the movie (Poor Thing is an example of this, where they changed the lyrics in order to fit with the flashbacks they filmed).

  • In Tim Burton's film Pirellis Miracle Elixir has almost entirely different lyrics, bar the first verse :(

  • @AngelorPhantom1359 It doesn't hep that Sweeney resembles the Joker neither...

  • okay no wonder it was a flop in London when it originally premiered. This woman who plays Mrs. Lovett is HORRIBLE!!!!

  • I wish he would explain every song :(

  • Boy! Stephen sure put a lot of work into this!

  • Mrs Lovett didnt have a voice?

Sounded small ranged and just bad
