THE STORY:
During the Summer of 1997, Billy and his friend and bassist Brad Clayton were over in America working on a sitcom they had penned called 'Coming to Save America'. After about three weeks Brad had headed back to the UK to (re)tend to his life, but Billy had stayed on gigging at various bars (and eventually overstaying his visa -- but that is another story). By Labor Day at the end Summer, Billy had 'Pied Piper' his way to a good handful of loyal fans.

I was going to have an 'end of the Summer' bash and Billy (along with his newly formed 'American Band' -- Larry Schnieder and Tony Schiavo). Were to play the party.

And me, being an opportunist, wanted to make a music video for Billy's feel good song 'All Mine'.

I think I can speak for both Billy and myself to say that this is not really the 'Official Video' for this song. The official video would probably look much different. In both storyline and craftsmanship (videomanship). But it was a good party and a fun way to top off a great and creative Summer.

As a disclaimer, most of the cast was quite drunk and because of the way it was shot (more on that just below in 'Technical Stuff') the dancing should be excused by the 'youtube proletariat' (in other words, save any shallow abuse).

TECHNICAL STUFF:
The most interesting technical feature of this video is that it was shot 'double speed' and then slowed down to give it the slow motion effect. It goes like this. I take the original Billy song and double the speed (so it sounds totally 'chipmunk') then play the song while Billy and everyone mimes to this fast version. And then slow that video back down (by 50%) to fit back into the original song. That's the basic reason why people look like they are having such a 'funny time' (that and the alcohol). The entire cast found what we were doing quite ridiculous.

And had just used this same effect in the 'Sleep A Little Easy' (http://youtu.be/lBTwLk8vbwg) video we made earlier that Summer. I thought it was a great 'video problem solver', it took the edge of the video look by slowing down the frame rate, and as a bonus it made the shoot twice as quick.

I haven't used this effect gain recently but and am thinking that I should give it a revisit.

Format wise it was shot on two different Super-VHS cameras. A classic Panasonic one chip (the AG-450) and a slightly better Panasonic two chip (the AG-460).

It was edited on my first non-linear system (that allowed the slo-motion effects) the Macrosystems Casablanca (aka: the 'Draco')

NEW TWISTS:
This video has been converted for 16 by 9 screen size. The original 4 by 3 video can be found here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3e5LFO1omHA

It has also been effected with a magic bullet filter ('mojo'), to try to take the edge off that old video look. A year or two from now I may decide the effect is too much (as I often do with effects) so have also posted a non effected 16 by 9 version here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvV4U0jkUds

REFLECTION:
It's a nice video to look back on my family and friends (my oldest daughter is less than one and makes an appearance -- that's very sweet to me). Life has changed much for so many in this video, but nostalgia is generally welcomed by me.

See you all soon,
