Police Inspector Murders Wife & 6 Year old Daughter in Murder-Suicide.

A policeman killed his wife and seven-year-old daughter before taking his own life in a frenzied knife attack on his family - a week after he was sacked.
Tobias Day, 37, left his two other children - Kimberley, 15, and Adam, 13 - with serious injuries following the tragedy at their home in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.

Police were first alerted to the attack at 4.23pm on Thursday after the eldest daughter escaped and ran, despite having stab wounds, to a nearby school to raise the alarm.

As she was taken to hospital, police received a second 999 call and rushed to the house.

Officers forced their way into the home and found Mr Day, his wife Samantha and their young daughter Genevieve dead.

The police inspector's teenage son was still alive and was rushed to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, where both he and his older sister remain in a serious but stable condition.

Detectives have launched a murder probe and say the attack is believed to have been fuelled by Mr Day's dismissal from Leicestershire police on December 1.

The award-winning policeman was sacked following a misconduct hearing over matters of honesty and integrity relating to misuse of police computer systems.

On the day of the attack, police had told Mr Day there was press interest in the case.

Neighbours have described their shock and have been leaving tributes of flowers and balloons outside the house.

Neighbour Samantha Whitfield said "It's very bad. It's very upsetting for people around here."

Gavin Lucas who lives across the road from the family told the News: "They were a really nice family. Whenever I saw them they always said hello. I'm shocked."

The local vicar, Reverend Kevin Ashby visited the scene.

He told the News "They were very well known and will be greatly missed. It looks like the other two children will survive and that's got to be good news. Our prayers are very much with them and we hope we can give them as much support as we can."

The IPCC said it will not carry out a formal investigation into the incident.

In a statement, it said: "The IPCC has now completed an assessment of a referral from Leicestershire Police into the incident in Melton Mowbray in which three people died.

"We have decided the tragic incident can continue to be investigated by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Crime Team without need for any IPCC investigation."
