The SOG Aegis Tanto, with a partly serrated blade is cumbersome for certain every day carry tasks - at least for me, but EDC is not the role that I think this knife was intended for. This Tanto version of the Aegis is a straight up tactical knife. Jimping on the spine is mega-aggressive, the weight is a very carry-able 3.1 oz., the AUS 8 blade steel is decent and affordable, the spring assist mechanism is quick and reliable, and the tanto blade shape is built for social work.

I imagine soldiers and police officers will find lots of uses for this blade, but for an average civilian like me, this knife has lots of cool factor, but not a lot of usability. With it's $60-70+ price tag, it probably won't be joining my collection.

  • Is there a break in period with this knife? I ordered mine from amazon and got it yesterday, and am disappointed. Although the knife is very sharp, there was a lot of side-to-side blade play, and some horizontal play. I tightened up those mini torque screws or whatever and fixed the side to side play mostly, but now the blade comes out really slow, barely making it out on it's own. Not that it was ever fast to begin with...send it to SOG?

  • @crailberry Send it to SOG, absolutely.

  • can you tighten the blade if it has some back and forth play?

  • @couldbemeaningful That can help to reduce side to side play, but it won't do anything for front to back movement.

  • @TheLateBoyScout so you would do this by twisting the little screw on the side?

  • @couldbemeaningful Correct.

  • a very deep cary is a good thing if, like me, you live somewhere where there are strong taboos against knives. people think its a pen or some shit.

  • @DocTacDad ...but good looking and fun to play with. :)

  • I just got a sog flash 2 brand new, and right out of the box it had a crazy amount of blade play up and down and side to side... after 3 emails they finally emailed me back and i should be sending it in soon... I think blade play is just something normal in there spring assisted line.

  • I pretty much agree with you review..Not the first knife I would choose for EDC or even as an EDTac companion. I prefer higher traction plans on an EDTac companion.

The blade SOG delivers is an expensive pattern to grind and this certainly will add to the cost, however the liner-less Zytel handle should more than cancel that out.

Compared to your Spyderco Tenacious it looks like a poor buy.

Strange to crap on a blade so and then so love the ffg 2 oz ffg Aegis...IDK..It just works

    Peace

  • I have a SOG Flash II.

  • Tanto means that the blade is hollow ground and the tip is flat ground.... thats the point. Its not advertised as a EDC knife tanto knifes are designed for defensive or militiary purpose, thats why they make both kinds :).

  • After owning two Aegis knives for 5-6 months (digi camo and black w/ straight edge black TiNi) i can confidently say two things 1. this blade is very comfortable to carry, if u grab by the pocket clip its easy to extract and is a very nice deployment. 2. the straight edge is going to be your best bet for edc
