In this simple and quick tutorial, I show you how to make an image of a still flag appear like it is wrinkled using a stock photo of a piece of cotton, and making it into a displacement map. In this tutorial we cover using stock images, displacement masks, the magic eraser tool, the multiply blend mode, and how to get rid of noise.
The two images that I used are from:
Flag: http://www.gsea.org/awardinfo/locate/PublishingImages/flag_canada.gif
Cotton: http://secretsheik.deviantart.com/art/White-Cotton-129564671
Noise Reduction Settings:
Strength: 10
Preserve Details: 13%
Reduce Colour Noise: 100%
*These settings might not work as well for you!
Tips:
1. Use the technique of a displacement map to wrinkle or texture anything!
2. Use the burn tool to add definition to the flag layer
3. Use a smooth fabric such as silk or cotton as your displacement map. Never use burlap or anything similar unless that is the texture you are looking for.
4. Try using a displacement map on something that is already textured, such as burlap over rocks.
5. Experiment with different blending modes on the top cotton layer to get different effects
6. Use the blur tool to soften up the edges of the flag layer if they are still noisy after using the noise reduction panel
7. Play with different horizontal and vertical scale levels to make the effect more ore less dramatic.
Isn't this an old video?

@M1sterHamilton Yes, I just chopped out a few seconds where it was showing my full name. People in the comments were being creepy about it.
