After mangling the first steel press at the very end of last year on some bramleys I had to make another. Rather than get it made I figured I'd have a go myself. Its big, heavy and a very long way from the original oak frame in 2009 but hopefully this year its going to survive. I think so. I never intended to make a press this large but with the 30 ton jack and seeing what happened to the last one it was the only option. Its a 2 man job to put it together and I cant wait to see what it does with the first lot of cheeses we put into it. The really nice thing about this design is it can be taken apart and moved and stored but will still take 125 litres of pommice each go. Hopefully three presses will fill the 210litre barrels we have. There over 2 tons of apples on their way, not including the 1ton is I hope to collect so its going to be well used this year.

  • Nice work Mark. But if this one goes pop the amount of energy you'll have squeezed in, will mean you'll probably take someone's head off! Let me know when you're doing it, I'd like to watch....

  • Hello fella. The health and safety aspect has started to dawn! The thredded bars can hold way over 30 tons so I think were safe. I have specific experiance...... I did break a 60 ton tensile testing machine once back in my metallurgy days and it went with such a bang the groud shook and people came running in the factory. it was on my birfday as well. Funny. Will let you know when by email.

  • Hi there...did you use the press for this year's production?

  • That's a he'll of a press. I would double up on the threaded rods. They're only grade 3.

I don't know the guys name, but he has a video here using a cardboard bailing machine as a press. Lmao!!

  • Nice one Mark, very impressive..........

  • I can't wait to see this in action, I sold out and bought one this year. But there is no better feeling than making your own and seeing it work.
