September 2, 2010 - Ubud's Gamelan Semara Ratih in final rehearsal of Evan Ziporyn's "Lapanbelas" (18) - outside the Pura Dalem on the road to Campuhan...piece was premiered 9/8/10 at Tropentheater, Amsterdam, Netherlands
My former remark doesn't mean that I don't like this recording. It's well done and the sound is good, good microphone for sure. Maybe I was trying to say that the next step should be a cd/dvd multi-mic recording that allows evrything to be heard in the right balance. I think it must be a fantastic challenge to record and mix this piece for a cd or dvd production.
Great upload but a pity the mic doesn't really catch the overall result of the interlocking and shifting patterns and of the layers of sound woven together in the orchestra. Throughout the piece there's gradual development and change vs a great variety of sounds, temperaments and tempi. Lapanbelas is full of the most amazing colours. The premiere in Amsterdam was superb and for me this piece was an 'instant favourite'.
